Campbell kicks game-winning field goal in season-opener at West Chester

WEST CHESTER, Pa. – Mason Campbell drilled a 38-yard field goal as time expired to give the Bentley football team a season-opening 20-17 win at West Chester Saturday afternoon.

The Falcons were in a 17-10 deficit when it drove down inside the Golden Rams' 20-yard line with five minutes left in regulation. The Falcons got inside the 10-yard line when Brett Pullman completed a pass to Rashon Bradford, but the play was nullified by an illegal block penalty, which moved Bentley back to the 18-yard line. From there, the Falcons couldn't find any forward momentum and turned the ball over on downs.

It appeared that West Chester had a victory in its grasp – as long as it took care of the ball. On the very first play of its drive, the Golden Rams' quarterback was hit in the backfield by Matt Duchemin, and the ball came loose. Nick Pucillo pounced on the fumble, giving Bentley possession on the West Chester 15 yard line.

The Falcons needed just one play to reach the end zone and tie the game, 17-17. Vinnie Holmes took a handoff to the house as part of his 105-yard game on the ground.

The Golden Rams' ensuing possession started on their 24-yard line with 3:35 left in the fourth quarter. The team needed just three plays to move to Bentley's 42-yard line, but the Bentley defense ultimately stood up the Rams on four-and-one from the Falcons' 33-yard line.

Bentley had 1:11 to move into field goal range for Campbell. The drive started with a 32-yard run by Holmes, but once again a big play was negated by a Falcon penalty. Bentley was moved back to its 26-yard line after a holding call. On 2nd-and-17, Pullman connected with Pat Damon for a 34-yard completion down to West Chester's 40-yard line.
Two plays later, Pullman hit Isaiah Decias for an 11-yard gain. That's when Bentley called timeout with 30 seconds on the clock.

Holmes took three consecutive carries to total eight yards, as both teams burned timeouts during that stretch. Holmes' final carry put the ball on West Chester's 21-yard line with three seconds left, and Campbell took care of the rest.

With his heroics, Campbell became Bentley's No. 8 all-time leading scorer (190), and he ranks No. 3 all-time for made field goals (31).

The Falcons entered halftime in a 17-3 deficit, but Pullman rushed into the end zone from one yard out late in the third quarter for Bentley's first touchdown of the game. Pullman completed 27 of 42 pass attempts, and Damon had a game-high 82 receiving yards.

Defensively, Rene Nunez led the team in tackles with 10. Joey Disalvo recorded a sack, and three other Falcons notched a tackle for a loss (Henry Schouten, Duchemin, Joe Rivers).

The Falcons have another road game next week in a non-conference matchup at Saint Anslem, Sept. 14. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
