COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. –
Arlo Merritt and
Jake Black each scored goals but Bentley fell to Colorado College 5-2 in its season opener on Friday night.
CC took the early lead on a goal by Klavs Veinbergs at the 6:06 mark of the first period on the second of two straight power plays. Bentley successfully killed off the first power play but the Tigers were able to take advantage on the second for a 1-0 lead.
A little over five minutes later however, the Falcons struck back and tied the game on Merritt's goal. Black fed a pass to
Ryan Upson in the slot who one-timed a shot that was saved, and Merritt came in on the backside to score off the big rebound.
The game stayed 1-1 until the midpoint of the second period when CC scored twice in just under three minutes to go in front 3-1.
With 55 seconds remaining in the second frame, Black scored to pull Bentley within one goal. A long pass from the defensive zone by
Colton Cameron to
Michael Mesic in the offensive zone got the play started. Mesic then fed a centering pass to Black whose initial shot was saved but he tipped-in the rebound for the goal.
Early in the third period, the Tigers scored twice in 3:47 with the goals by Wilson Bjorck and Brayden Schuurman to take a 5-2 lead.
Falcons goalie
Easton Hesse made 31 saves.
Bentley will play the second game of its season opening trip on Saturday against Denver with puck drop at 9:00 pm eastern.
