WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley fell short in its quest to win the NE10 men's soccer championship as the Falcons fell to Franklin Pierce 4-1 on Saturday afternoon.
The #1 seed, regular season champions and #11 nationally ranked Falcons suffered their first defeat in 14 games and first since the third game of the season, more than two months ago.
Ranked second in the latest Super Region 1 rankings, Bentley now awaits the NCAA selection show on Monday at 7:00 pm.
Franklin Pierce took the early lead in the 7
th minute on a goal by Borja Blazquez.
But the Falcons equalized in the 44
th minute on a tremendous long range strike by
Antonio Santos. Build up by
Mathieu Page and
David Rumble found Santos with the ball about 30 yards away from the goal and he unleashed a shot that beat FPU keeper David Skorodumov to the far post.
In the 58
th minute however, FPU took the lead back at 2-1 when Jesse Oostendorp scored off a header on a corner kick.
Joao Araujo scored unassisted in the 68
th minute and Championship Most Outstanding Player Guillermo Avendano finished the scoring in the 85
th minute.
Bentley's record goes to 11-2-4.
