WALTHAM, Mass. – Cassidy Yeomans and
Mikela Cooper both notched their first-career double-doubles to lead the No. 24 Bentley women's basketball team to a 76-61 win over American International Wednesday night.
Yeomans dished out a career-high 11 assists to go with her 12 points. She shot 4-for-10 from beyond the arc. Cooper pulled down a career-best 10 rebounds, six of which were on the offensive end. She finished the game with 10 points.
Kayana Armbrister scored a team-high 20 points for Bentley (10-2, 6-0 NE10), and
Niya Morgen finished with 17 points.
The Falcons had difficulty navigating the Yellow Jackets' high-pressure defense early on, as Bentley committed three turnovers within the first five minutes of the game. The opening quarter ended with Morgen beating the buzzer with a fastbreak layup to give the Falcons a 17-16 lead.
AIC (10-5, 4-3 NE10) went up by one, 23-22, two minutes into the second quarter. But
Julia Elie scored in the paint to kickstart a 12-0 run that gave Bentley a 34-23 lead. Cooper scored seven points during that run. Bentley's halftime lead was 41-35.
Midway through the third quarter, AIC got to within a point, 51-50. Morgen knocked down a 3-pointer to cushion Bentley's lead. It was the first bucket of a 10-0 run to end the third quarter, as Bentley held a 61-50 lead heading into the fourth.
Bentley had a defining sequence early in the fourth quarter. Armbrister came up with a steal, Yeomans led the fastbreak, and she threw a great leading bounce pass to
Cherish Bryant.
Bryant made the fastbreak layup, with a foul. She hit the free-throw to push Bentley's lead to 64-52. The Falcons led by double digits for the rest of the game.
The Falcons are on the road at Assumption this Saturday, Jan. 17. Game time is set for 1:30 p.m.
