WALTHAM, Mass. – The night began with the 2026 championship banners being revealed and it ended with Bentley shutting out Vermont in the season opener 3-0 on Friday night.
Falcons goalie
Lukas Swedin made 30 saves and the goals came from
James Duerr,
Jimmy Doyle and
Owen Goodbrand.
Bentley scored on two of its four shots in the opening period for a 2-0 lead.
Duerr, in his first game as a Falcon, scored from a tight angle on the left side on the rebound from a shot by
Peter Kramer at 7:04 of the first frame.
Just under seven minutes later,
Jimmy Doyle, returning after missing most of last season with an injury, lit the lamp on a breakaway.
Marton Nemes provided the outlet pass from the defensive end and found Doyle streaking past the UVM defense. The senior from Plainfield, Illinois calmly finished for the goal and a 2-0 lead.
With a two-goal cushion Swedin repeatedly slammed the door on the Catamounts. He made 14 saves in the first period and 10 in the second period. The penalty kill went 3-3 in the first 40 minutes.
In the final minutes of the third period Vermont pulled its goalie and Bentley took advantage with the clinching goal by Goodbrand.
Ryan Mansfield gained control of the puck in the neutral zone and skated down the left wing where he spotted Goodbrand open in front of the crease for the finish.
With the season opening win in the books, Bentley will look to make it two-for-two when they host Northeastern on Saturday starting at 6:00 pm.
