WALTHAM, Mass. –
Owen Goodbrand scored with 3:28 left in overtime to give Bentley a 3-2, game one win over Holy Cross to take a 1-0 lead in the best of three Atlantic Hockey semifinal series.
An initial shot on goal by Goodbrand went wide and set off a scrum for the puck in front of the Holy Cross net. It squirted out to defenseman
David Helledy who found Goodbrand with open space to tee up a shot. Goodbrand then pinpointed his shot through traffic and into the back of the net to set off a celebration at Bentley Arena in the 3-2 win.
The game wouldn't have gotten to overtime if not for a clutch goal by
Michael Mesic with 53 seconds left in regulation.
Jack Dalton found Mesic open with a cross ice pass and Mesic fired his shot from the left faceoff circle into the top corner to tie the game 2-2 and force overtime.
That was Mesic's second goal of the night.
His first came on the power play, 20 seconds into the third period, to tie the score 1-1.
The teams battled in a scoreless game until Holy Cross took a 1-0 lead at 17:32 of the 2
nd period on a goal by Matt Kursonis.
After Mesic's first goal, Holy Cross took the lead back at 2-1 on a goal by Brody Gagno at 14:06 of the third period.
Bentley ended the game with a 39-25 edge in shots.
They will look to close out the series in game two on Saturday. Puck drop is at 6:00 pm.
