WALTHAM, Mass. – Brendan Sencaj delivered a dramatic win in the Bentley baseball team's home opener as the Falcons topped Southern New Hampshire, 3-2, in 10 innings Friday afternoon.
Jared Berardino led off the 10
th inning with a single, and he moved into scoring position on a throwing error by the Penman pitcher.
Chase Mendela came in to pinch run for Berardino as Sencaj stepped to the plate.
Sencaj worked the count 3-0, but SNHU's pitcher fought back by throwing consecutive strikes. With the count full, Sencaj ripped a base hit to left center field that easily scored Mendela for the walkoff win.
Stan DeMartinis III belted his Northeast 10 leading ninth home run of the season in the fourth inning. His solo shot hit the top of the scoreboard in left field, giving Bentley a 1-0 lead.
SNHU posted two runs in the sixth inning to take a 2-1 lead, but the Falcons tied the game in the seventh.
Curt Heath led off that inning by smacking the first pitch for an opposite field single.
Jimmy Mitchell laid down a sacrifice bunt, and Tommy Gonnan hit a single to Heath to third base.
Jake Maydak delivered the game-tying run with a groundout.
Keegan Antelman earned the win by pitching four outstanding innings out of the bullpen. He allowed just one hit and struck out five.Â
Pat Heber was excellent in his six-inning start on the hill. He struck out nine batter and allowed two earned runs on three hits.
Berardino and Goonan both finished the game 3-for-4 at the plate.
Bentley and SNHU are slated for a doubleheader Saturday, March 21, starting at 12 p.m.
