Mitchell, DeMartinis lead Bentley to doubleheader wins over SNHU

WALTHAM, Mass. – Jimmy Mitchell and Stan DeMartinis III both homered twice, as the Bentley baseball team won twice against Southern New Hampshire Saturday afternoon.

Bentley 12, Southern New Hamshire 3 (7 inn.)
Jimmy Mitchell homered twice and hit a three-run double to lead the Bentley baseball team to a 12-3 win over Southern New Hampshire in the first game of Saturday's doubleheader. Mitchell launched a solo home run in the second inning to tie the game, 2-2. His second homer was also a solo shot, pushing Bentley's lead to 6-3 in the third.

Bentley had a 9-3 lead entering the home half of the sixth inning, but still the Falcons poured it on. With Nick Pappas, Stan DeMartinis III, and Brendan Sencaj on base, Mitchell roped a double just out of the reach of the leaping shortstop. The ball rolled all the way to the left-centerfield gap, allowing all three baserunners to score.

DeMartinis belted his conference leading 10th home run of the season in the third inning. The no-doubter over the left field fence plated three runs for a 5-2 Bentley lead.

Jared Berardino launched his eighth home run of the season in the first inning – a solo bomb to straight away centerfield.

Caleb Allen earned the win to improve to 3-0. The freshman struck out six batters in four shutout innings.

Mitchell finished the game 3-for-3 with five RBI.

Bentley 7, Southern New Hampshire 6 (7 inn.)
It wasn't the prettiest the walk-off, but it was a walk-off win, nonetheless. Jackson Wilburn laid down a bunt that ultimately led to Stan DeMartinis III scoring the winning run, 7-6, in the bottom of the seventh inning.

DeMartinis led off the home half of the final inning by ripping a double to left field. After Brendan Sencaj was intentionally walked, Wilburn was brought in to pinch hit. His first bunt attempt went foul down the third base line.

His second attempt didn't get up the line as much as he would have liked. The pitcher fielded the grounder, but he hesitated after scooping up the ball. The pitcher decided to throw to third base to get DeMartinis on a force play. However, the throw was errant. Not only was DeMartinis safe at third, but he came in to score the winning run on the play.

Bentley was down 2-1 in the third inning, but the Falcons loaded the bases thanks to walks drawn by Tommy Bolton and Jared Berardino, followed by a Nick Pappas single. DeMartinis stepped to the plate and crushed a grand slam to dead centerfield. It was his conference-leading 11th home run of the season.

Bolton, Pappas, and DeMartinis each finished the game with two hits.

With three wins in this series against the Penmen, the Falcons host SNHU one more time Sunday, March 22, at 12 p.m.
