WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley won a marathon game one of the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinals over Mercyhurst 4-3 in triple overtime on a goal by
Jake Black.
Black's goal at 6:43 ended a marathon game that saw the Falcons outshoot the Lakers 69-25 and take a 1-0 lead in this quarterfinal series.
Black's goal came after a shot by defenseman
Jack Dalton was off target.
Kellan Hjartarson dug the puck out and fed it to Black, who wheeled around a fired a shot from the right faceoff circle for the goal.
Mercyhurst goalie Charles Edward Gravel made 65 saves in one of the longest games in AHA history.
In regulation, the Falcon goals were scored by
Michael Mesic, Black and
Alec Leonard.
Mercyhurst got off to a fast start with two goals in the first period and led 2-0 after 10 minutes played.
Mesic got the Falcons on the board at the 16:47 mark with Black and Hjartarson on the assists.
Early in the second period Black scored a power play goal to tie the game 2-2. Dalton had the assist.
Bentley went ahead 3-2 with just five minutes left in the second period on a goal by Leonard.
Mercyhurst tied the game on a power play goal at 13:07 of the third period and that was the final goal of regulation.
Game two gets underway at 6:00 pm on Saturday.
