WALTHAM, Mass. – Bentley defeated Mercyhurst 6-0 in game two to sweep the Atlantic Hockey quarterfinal series and advance to the semifinals at home next weekend.
After winning a triple overtime thriller in game one on Friday, the longest game in program history, no such drama was needed on Saturday.
Bentley jumped out to a 2-0 lead after nine minutes of the first period and never let up.
Defenseman
David Helledy scored the first goal of the night at 4:34. He entered the offensive zone with speed from the other end of the ice and ripped a shot from the left faceoff circle that found the back of the net.
Just under five minutes later
Kellan Hjartarson made it 2-0.
Stephen Castagna put a shot on net from the left faceoff dot and Hjartarson fought off the defender covering him to tip the puck in for a two goal lead.
Bentley pressed ahead in the second period and extended its lead to 4-0 with two goals less than two minutes apart.
Chase Davis scored at 8:54 to make it 3-0, with the assists by
Ryan Upson and
Oliver Salo.
Less than two minutes later, a faceoff win in the offensive zone by Hjartarson created an opportunity for
Jake Black, who scored with a shot from the top of the slot for his third goal of the series.
That pushed his points total to 40 on the season.
In the third period, Helledy notched his second goal of the night at the 4:16 mark and
Arlo Merritt lit the lamp at 11:53.
Lukas Swedin made 14 saves for his first career shutout.
Bentley's opponent for the semifinals is still to be determined. They will host the best of three series, beginning next Friday night.
