Doiron, Cain Help Bentley Complete Sweep of AIC, 11-2 and 4-0

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WALTHAM, Mass. – Sophomore righty Peyton Doiron (Beacon Falls, Conn./ St. Joseph HS) pitched a four-hit ten-strikeout shutout and graduate third baseman Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge HS) broke the Falcons' single-season home run record as Bentley University completed a sweep of a Northeast-10 Conference softball doubleheader of American International College Tuesday afternoon with a 4-0 game two victory.

Bentley took the opener by the count of 11-2 in six innings as junior first baseman Kaylee Mankins (North Attleboro/Bishop Feehan HS) and freshman left fielder Jordan Krause (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro HS) combined for seven hits, five runs scored and three RBI in seven at bats.

The opener was close, with Bentley up 3-2, until the Falcons erupted for eight runs in the sixth inning to invoke the eight-run rule. The inning included RBI doubles by freshman designated player Dahlia Fink (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame HS) and junior second baseman Katherine Noftall (Ipswich/Ipswich HS) and RBI singles by Cain and Mankins. Mankins' single to left was misplaced by the left fielder and she was able to circle the bases to close out the game.

Bentley had taken a 2-1 lead in the first on a sacrifice fly by senior right fielder Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) and an RBI single by Mankins. The Falcons made it 3-1 in the third on yet another RBI single by Mankins.

Mankins, in the opener, was 4-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Krause, who finished the twinbill with a .452 average, was 3-for-3 with a walk and three runs scored.

Bentley's 12-hit attack also included two by Fink.

Senior Elise Pereira (Plainville/King Philip Reg. HS) went the distance to pick up her seventh win of the season. She allowed five hits and struck out five.

Game two was scoreless until the fourth when Cain tripled to left center and scored on Fink's third hit of the afternoon.

An inning later, Hillier had an RBI double and Cain delivered her sixth home run of the season, a two-run shot to center. It broke the record set by Laurie Frazier in 1993 and also equaled the Bentley career record of seven, a mark Cain reached in her 23rd Falcon game.

Both Cain, the NE10 co-leader in home runs, and junior center fielder Sam Petow (Glastonbury, Conn./Glastonbury HS) had two hits for Bentley.

Doiron set a career-high in strikeouts and stranded three runners on third. The victory was her fourth of the year.

Bentley improved to 13-11 overall and 3-5 NE10 while AIC dropped to 3-21 overall (1-9 conference).

The Falcons are back in action Wednesday with a doubleheader at Saint Anselm. That game was scheduled for Thursday but moved in anticipation of inclement weather.
