Bentley Sweeps Southern Connecticut; Cain Becomes Bentley's All-Time Home Run Leader

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

WALTHAM, Mass. – Graduate student Kaileen Cain (Hauppauge, N.Y./Hauppauge HS) became the program's all-time leading home run hitter and freshman Kim Saunders (Stamford, Conn./Stamford HS) saved both games as Bentley University swept Southern Connecticut State, 5-2 and 6-3, in Northeast-10 Conference softball on Senior Day at Bentley.

Cain, who previously broke the single season mark for home runs, hit her seventh of the spring and eighth of her career in the fifth inning of game two, making it a 6-2 game at the time. Senior catcher Ella Hillier (Tualatin, Ore./Tualatin HS) scored in front of her on her blast to center.

Bentley's other four runs were scored in the first inning. Hillier had an RBI single and later scored on an error, tying the game at 2-2, and sophomore designated player Morgan Fraitzl (Bedford, N.H./Bedford HS) had a two-run single through the left side to put the Falcons on top.

Cain, who also had a double, was the only Falcon to have multiple hits in the game. Her milestone homer came in just her 35th game as a Falcon.

Saunders, who came in the game with two out and the bases loaded in the seventh, struck out the only batter she faced to preserve the victory for freshman Dahlia Fink (Sherman Oaks, Calif./Notre Dame HS). Fink allowed nine hits, walked only one and struck out eight for her fourth win of the season.

Bentley also had a productive first inning in the opener, scoring twice. Following hits by freshman left fielder Jordan Krause (San Pedro, Calif./San Pedro HS), sophomore right fielder Kylee Amato (Bergenfield, N.J./Acad. of the Holy Angels) and junior designated player Kaylee Mankins (North Attleboro/Bishop Feehan HS), Cain was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, forcing in Krause. Amato made it 2-0 when she scored on an error.

In the second, Bentley made it 3-0 when Amato followed a single by Krause with a triple to left field.

After the Owls (13-19, 6-12 NE10) drew within a run, Bentley scored twice in the bottom of the fifth to restore the three-point lead. Sophomore shortstop Sabrina Grizzaffi (Ridgefield, Conn./Ridgefield HS) drove in Cain with a triple and scored on a pinch-hit single by Fraitzl.

Krause, Amato and Mankins each had two hits for Bentley as the top three in the order were a combined six for 11 at the plate.

Saunders, the third Bentley pitcher, saved the ninth win of the season for senior Elise Pereira (Plainville/King Philip Reg. HS) with a scoreless seventh inning.

Bentley (18-16, 10-10 NE10) is back at home on Sunday with a noon doubleheader against the University of New Haven.
