MIAMI – Stan DeMartinis III belted a couple of home runs, and
Pat Heber threw a gem to lead the Bentley baseball team to a 7-2 win at Barry in the 2025 season opener Friday evening.
Friday was DeMartinis' first game in a Bentley uniform since 2023. He missed all of last year due to injury. Two seasons ago, he hit .318 in 157 at-bats, including 11 home runs and 49 RBI.
The Falcons scored the game's first run in the first inning, but the score remained 1-0 heading into the seventh inning. That's when
Tommy Bolton led off with a single to center field, and two batters later
Nick Pappas was hit by a pitch.
Jared Berardino hit into a fielder's choice, allowing the Falcons to keep two runners on base with two outs.
DeMartinis stepped to the plate and quickly fell behind in the count, 0-2. He took the next two patches for balls, and then fouled off the fifth pitch. DeMartinis belted the at-bat's sixth offering over the outfield fences, giving Bentley a 4-0 lead.
Bentley added another run in the eighth inning when
Jimmy Mitchell led off by getting hit by a pitch, and he later came around to score on a wild pitch.
In the ninth inning, Berardino smacked a one-out double down the left-field line, and DeMartinis promptly followed by crushing a two-run homer.
Heber earned the win by throwing seven shutout innings. He allowed only two hits and a couple of walks while striking out seven. His outing included one-two-three frames in the first, third, fifth, and sixth innings.
Bentley remains in Florida to take on Lynn Saturday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m.
