Box Score 2 WALTHAM, Mass. -- After stealing third on the front end of a double steal, Bentley University freshman center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood/Norwood HS) raced home with the winning run when the catcher's throw went into left field, giving the Falcons a 2-1 game two season-ending victory and a split of their college baseball doubleheader with Adelphi University Sunday afternoon at DeFelice Field.
Adelphi took the first game, 2-0, behind the pitching of senior lefty Mike Scudero (Massapequa Park, N.Y.) to lock up second place in the Northeast-10 standings. The second game of the twinbill was considered non-conference.
Keady, who finished the year with a school record 34 steals, hit a one-out single to center, his fifth hit of the day, to start the winning rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. He stole second, and after a ground out, senior right fielder Chris Hardy (Warwick, R.I./Bishop Hendricken HS) was walked intentionally, setting the stage for the double steal that led to the walk-off victory.
Adelphi (31-12-2, 19-6-1 NE-10) got on the board in the first inning of the scheduled seven-inning nightcap, scoring on an RBI single by junior first baseman T.J. Humrich (Franklin Square, N.Y.).
Bentley (15-29, 8-18 NE-10) came back to tie the contest in the fourth and again, Keady was in the middle of things. Junior left fielder Mark Lane (Tyngsboro/Tyngsboro HS) singled, stole second and came in for the Falcons' first run of the three-game series on a two-out single to right center to Keady.
The Panthers threatened in the top of the seventh, with two on and one out. Junior Lamarre Rey (Lynn/Pingree School) was brought in from the bullpen, and he got a strikeout and fly ball to retire the side. Rey was credited with his second win of the season and finished the year unscored upon in six relief appearances.
Keady (3-4) and Lane (2-3) combined for five of the nine hits for Bentley, which received a solid pitching performance from junior starter Matt Sherman (Longmeadow/Longmeadow HS). He pitched the first six and limited AU to five hits and one run while striking out five.
Scudero, 7-1 on the season, authored a four-hit, 11-strikeout shutout in the opener, besting Bentley sophomore John Yohe (Merrick, N.Y./St. Dominic's HS) in a pitcher's duel. Yohe scattered five hits while allowing only single runs in the fifth and ninth, and neither pitcher issued a walk.
An RBI single by Humrich produced the fifth inning run, and it stayed 1-0 under the ninth. Right fielder Omar Velasquez (Astoria, N.Y.) was hit by a pitch, stole second and third, and scored on a single through the right side by senior catcher Richard McCarren (Seaford,N.Y.).
Keady had two of Bentley's four hits in the game.
