Army Clips Bentley 3-2 on Burns' Short-Handed Goal

Box Score

WATERTOWN, Mass. – A short-handed goal by Army's R.J. Burns was the difference as the Black Knights came away with a 3-2 victory over the Bentley University hockey team Thursday night in Atlantic Hockey action at Ryan Arena.

The Falcons (6-6-0, 5-4-0 AHA) fell behind 2-0 on a first period goal by Army's Andy Starczewski and a second period goal by Josh Richards, but rallied to tie the score on two goals just 13 seconds apart.

Junior Justin Breton (Fitchburg, Mass./Boston Jr. Bruins) netted his seventh goal of the season from Alex Grieve (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) with 11:47 remaining in the second period to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Just 13 seconds later, sophomore Brett Switzer (Calgary, Alberta/Westside Warriors) put one in to knot the score at two, with freshmen Tyler Krause (Kelowna, British Columbia/Okotoks Oilers) and Andrew Gladiuk (White Rock, British Columbia/Nanaimo Clippers) on the assists.

But the opportunistic Black Knights went ahead for good on Burns' short-handed goal with 9:36 remaining in the period. With Jonathan Gehrt serving a minor for interference, Army's first penalty of the game to that point, Burns netted an unassisted goal off a Bentley turnover to give the visitors a 3-2 lead.

Neither team scored in the third period, though the Falcons pulled goalie Branden Komm (Williamsville, N.Y./Northfield Mount Hermon) for the final 1:05, but were unable to find the tying goal.

Goalie Ryan Leets made 24 saves to earn the win for Army, who improve to 4-6-1 overall and 4-2-1 in Atlantic Hockey play.

Bentley is back in action on Saturday when they face No. 11 Dartmouth in Hanover, N.H. The puck drops at 7:00 pm.
