Johnson, McLean Help Bentley to 3rd Straight Win, 6-2 over Bridgeport

Box Score

WINTER PARK, Fla. – Graduate student Bryant Johnson (Hopedale, Mass./Milford HS) drove in two runs with a first-inning double and senior lefty Blaine McLean (Medford, Mass./Cushing Academy) gave Bentley University a third straight quality start as the Falcons improved to 5-2 against East Region competition with a 6-2 win over the University of Bridgeport in non-conference college baseball Tuesday afternoon at Rollins College's Alfond Stadium.

Bentley jumped on top of the 1-2 Purple Knights early, scoring four times in bottom half of the first. Sophomore center fielder Sean Keady (Norwood, Mass./Norwood HS) led off with a single up the middle and stole second. Senior left fielder Mark Lane (Tyngsboro, Mass./Tyngsboro HS) walked, and junior second baseman Logan Gillis (Merrimack, N.H./Lawrence Academy) reached on a fielder's choice.  No one was retired on the play, giving the Falcons the bases loaded with no outs.

Johnson doubled to center, driving in both Keady and Lane. Gillis scored on a grounder to short by sophomore third baseman Nate Witkowski (Melrose/Malden Catholic HS), and junior first baseman Lamarre Rey (Lynn, Mass./Pingree School) followed with an RBI single through the left side.

After Bridgeport picked up a single run in the fourth, the Falcons added insurance in the sixth, scoring twice to make it a 6-1 game. Senior catcher Kevin Korwek (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand HS) had an RBI single and senior shortstop Vinnie Eruzione (Winthrop, Mass./Winthrop HS) drove in the Falcons' final run with a double.

McLean, the third Bentley starter in as many days to yield no more than one run, allowed six hits and three walks in his six innings of work, with one strikeout. Freshman Connor Root (Nashua, N.H./Nashua HS North) pitched the seventh and eighth, allowing one run and two hits, and sophomore Dante Padovani (Lynnfield, Mass./Lynnfield HS) came on for a scoreless ninth.

Bentley's nine hits included two apiece for Johnson, Gillis and Korwek.  Both of Johnson's were doubles.

Bentley, 5-9 with a three-game winning streak, is back at Alfond Wednesday for a 2 pm encounter with C.W. Post.
