Bentley football founders reunite on campus

WALTHAM, Mass. - Bentley football's Alumni Day – Oct. 17 - brought generations of Falcons back together to celebrate the players who helped establish and build the program during the 1970s. The opportunities, traditions, and experiences enjoyed by Bentley football student-athletes today exist because of the men who started it all more than five decades ago. Their commitment, sacrifice, and vision helped shape the program into what it is today.

Their impact extends far beyond the field. They helped create a culture of brotherhood, pride, and commitment that continues to influence generations of Falcons.

More than 50 members of Bentley football's earliest teams returned to campus the weekend of Oct. 16-19. They were celebrated on Yetten Field during halftime of Bentley's win over Saint Anselm (Oct. 17). Alumni traveled from across the country to be part of the recognition, while others who could not attend followed along through photos, messages, and event updates.

It was an opportunity to reconnect lifelong friendships, honor a significant chapter in Bentley football history, and celebrate the men who laid the foundation for everything the program has become.
Said Kevin Coen '77: "The camaraderie that we all had as teammates and friends was on display. I think it is appropriate to call us a 'Band of Brothers.'"

For Frank Doherty '85, President of the Bentley Football Gridiron Club, the reunion represented something much larger than a one-day gathering. "This reunion was more than just a gathering of former teammates and coaches. It was a celebration of lifelong friendships and a unique brotherhood that connects generations of Falcons. We owe them a huge debt of gratitude. Their legacy lives on in every player who has worn the uniform."

Current Head Coach CJ Scarpa '17 echoed those sentiments and emphasized the importance of recognizing the program's pioneers. "Our program truly appreciates the support of our alumni. It was great, and I was proud to see the founders of Bentley football back on campus and recognized in a way that was so well deserved. Their contributions created the foundation for everything our student-athletes experience today."

Bruce Buckley '75 described the celebration in simple and heartfelt terms. "It was a wonderful day! Special thanks to Kevin, Frank, Dave and everyone involved in making this a great experience."
For Buckley, the greatest gift was the chance to reunite with teammates and friends. "Seeing the boys from our playing days and getting a chance to get caught up was memorable. There will always be a special place in my heart for all of you guys!

Perhaps the most powerful reflection came from Robert Michalowski, who watched the joy unfold throughout the day. "The joy on their faces. It was unbelievable. I think they felt honored and it must have been such a great feeling for them to be recognized like that. I think they had felt forgotten for a minute. They were so pumped to see one another. They were like kids again. Pretty awesome."

Michalowski also noted how much fellow alumnus Peter Yetten enjoyed the opportunity to reconnect with teammates and relive memories from the program's early years.

The impact of the event extended well beyond those who returned to campus. Milton Marvin, who was traveling and unable to attend, followed the celebration through the photos and updates shared afterward. "It was great to see the pictures and the comments. Thanks for all your hard work organizing."

Another alumnus summed up the afternoon with a simple message: "What a wonderful event."
