Women's Basketball, Field Hockey & Softball Coach
When Daryl Leonard arrived at Bentley College in the summer of 1973, there was no women's athletic program. The Bloomington, Indiana0 native quickly changed that. In her first year, there was club-level field hockey, basketball and softball. A year later, each was given varsity status with Daryl teaching all the skills, coaching each team and setting up the competition.
By the time she left five years later, a winning tradition had been established in all three sports. Ten of her 11 varsity teams enjoyed winning seasons and her career record at Bentley was an impressive 106-48-8.
In 1977, Daryl led the field hockey team to a 12-0-2 record, the first unbeaten varsity team in Bentley history. That followed 8-3-2 and 8-3-3 seasons.
In basketball, Daryl frequently put her teams up against Division I institutions, such as Harvard, Boston College, Rhode Island and Providence. Bentley finished 15-7 in 1976 and 17-7 in 1977, and then earned a berth in the EAIAW Small College Satellite Tournament in 1978.
Softball won 24 of 34 games with Daryl at the helm, including a 10-2 record in 1977.
After leaving Bentley in 1978, Daryl earned her Master of Arts degree in Physical Education from Western Michigan University and continued to work in athletic administration. Among the positions she held were Director of Athletics at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and Director of Intercollegiate Athletics at the University of Wisconsin-Platteville.
