When Carroll McMillan was serving as Bentley's first varsity golf captain during the 1964 season, he had to be the hardest working athlete around. In addition to attending class and competing for the golf team, the Air Force veteran worked a 42-hour night shift in the auditing department at Star Market. In addition, he had three young children at home.
Â
A 1954 graduate of Gloucester High School. Carroll spent three years in the Air Force before eventually enrolling at Bentley. He earned his Associates degree in 1961 (Bentley was still a two-year school) and after a year in the workforce, returned when Bentley began offering bachelor’s degrees.
Â
Carroll, a consistent high seventies golfer, helped the Gordon Parrish-coached Falcons post an impressive 9-2 record during their first varsity season, losing only to Saint Anselm and the University of New Hampshire. Carroll, who also played the year before when Bentley competed on an informal basis, was named the squad's first Most Valuable Player for his efforts.
Â
Carroll's success on the golf course had begun long before his arrival at Bentley. His high school team finished second in the state tournament in 1954 and he captained the Eighth Air Force golf team to an all-service championship while stationed at Westover Air Force Base. He also finished second of 240 in the New England Air Force Tournament.
