Despite competing for Bentley College before the football program had gained varsity status, Steve Devoe helped to put the college on the gridiron map by leading the Falcons to a pair of club football national champions.
During his career from 1980 to 1983, Steve, a linebacker, led the Falcons to a 33-9-1 record.
As a freshman, he was fourth on the team in tackles with 74 (12 unassisted) and also had one fumble recovery and two sacks. The next season, the Waltham native had 33 tackles, one interception and five pass break-ups.Â
Devoe's junior year, marked Bentley's first national club football championship season, a campaign that saw the team finish at 10-0-1. He was named to the All-New England Collegiate Football Conference first team and a second team club football All-America. His 127 tackles for the year was a school record and he also added seven interceptions and two fumble recoveries.

Serving as the Falcon's co-captain as a senior, Steve helped the team to another club football national championship and a 9-2 record. He again led the team with 120 tackles, along with four fumble recoveries, one interception and four pass break-ups, to earn selection to the All-New England Collegiate Football Conference and the club football All-America teams.

"It was a great feeling to win the club football national championship at Bentley because it was something that had never been done before," Steve remembered. "l also think that those teams really started the winning tradition at Bentley."
