Hall of Fame
One of only three baseball players in Bentley history to be selected as the Player of the Year in the Northeast-10 (nee Northeast-7), Ron Minassian captured the conference’s inaugural award in 1981.
Â
The 6'2" Holbrook native had a season to remember for the Falcons that season, leading the team in both hitting (.366 average) and pitching (7-3, 2.29 ERA, 49 strikeouts). Bentley finished 16-14 that season, and coach Bob DeFelice used Ron on the mound in better than half of the games.
Â
Not surprisingly, he was Bentley's team MVP!
Â
Ron had a particularly memorable doubleheader in a sweep of Bryant May 9 that season. After going 3-for-3 with three runs scored and two RBIs in the first game (a 10-4 win), he struck out a career-high 10 batters, had two hits and two RBIs and was the winning pitcher in a 9-8 Falcon victory in the nightcap.
Â
Ron finished his career with 14 wins, matching what was then the school record, and five saves, also a Bentley record at the time. His lifetime earned run average, 3.83, was the fifth best in school history when he was inducted into the Bentley Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993.
Â
DeFelice made the righthander a regular in his rotation as a freshman. Ron led the staff in innings (65 1/3) and finished with a 4-3 record and a 3. 7 2 ERA.
Â
Ron was also Bentley's top pitcher as a junior, pitching to a 3.72 ERA.
Â
"Ron was a very exceptional player who had great stats," said DeFelice, who was Bentley’s head coach for the first 54 years of the program. "But what put him ahead of some others is that he's also a great person. He's also someone who had to overcome a great number of physical problems."
