Earning a college education is a difficult task in itself. When you add a Division II sport to earning a college education, you have a very daunting task. Scott Frerichs not only earned his bachelor’s degree in finance (3.81 GPA), he played both hockey and lacrosse while doing so. And when we say played, we mean it. Scott appeared in 105 hockey games in his career and 60 of 62 lacrosse games.

“Scott was unselfish, hardworking, always prepared. He had great hands, was creative, friendly and a great team player,” said athletic trainer Charlie Carkin of the two-sport star. Longtime head lacrosse coach Jim Murphy added, “You knew what you could ask of him and his teammates, and you knew what you would get, he had a lot to offer. He was reliable, a pure attackman but you could ask him to play midfield, and he could do it.”

In hockey, Scott finished his career tied for fifth on Bentley’s all-time scoring list with 110 points. He remains in the top 20 in scoring and is in the top ten in game-winning goals (8). He was also named the 1997 Bentley hockey MVP when he scored 12 goals, had 21 assists for 33 points.

His athletic prowess did not stop on the ice. Scott was named first-team All-Northeast-10 in lacrosse in 1996, second-team in 1997. He was also captain of the lacrosse team his senior year. His junior year was his best statistically as he scored 39 goals, had 21 assists and 60 points.

What really separated the Shaker Heights, Ohio native from everyone else was his intelligence. He graduated summa cum laude in December 1996. He made the President’s List five semesters, and the Dean’s List twice.

Scott’s resume of scholar athlete awards is as impressive as his individual numbers. He was a three-time GTE Academic All-America® second team. In 1997, he was presented with the Edward J. Powers Scholar-Athlete Award, and two years earlier, he was the Robbins/ECAC Scholar Athlete of the Year.
