With its tremendous history of success, Bentley's women's basketball has certainly seen its share of talented players and extraordinary leaders. In the late '80s, Stacy (Pahl) Schretzman was no exception as she helped elevate the Falcons from a very solid basketball team to a national Division II power.
"Stacy was a great team player and a dominant post player,” said Naismith Hall of Famer Barbara Stevens, Bentley’s head coach from 1986-2000. "Her willingness to play hard every day set the tone for the team. It turned out that her decision to come to Bentley was one of the best transfer situations we had up to that point. Stacy was exactly what we were looking for."
In her three years at Bentley, Stacy led the Falcons to an overall record of 90-11 and its first two trips to the NCAA Division II Final Four. Including her freshman year at Army, she finished her career with 1,053 points and 528 rebounds.
After sitting out the first semester of the 1987-88 season after transferring, Stacy paced Bentley to a team-record 28 wins and a berth in the NCAA Division II Regional Championship game. She finished second on the team in rebounds and fifth in scoring. She scored in double digits on 10 different occasions.
As a junior, the 6-1 post player was a large part of a 31-3 squad that became the first New England women's basketball team to win 30 games and the first Bentley team to advance beyond the regionals. What a memorable trip it was to Delta State in Cleveland, Miss. for the NCAA Division II Fab Four! The Falcons suffered a tough 84-83 double-OT loss to Cal Poly Pomona in the national semifinals, but more than captured the hearts of the crowd with its play.
Stacy, who hailed from Troy, Ohio, saved the best for last, as Bentley returned back to the Final Four in 1989-90. For the second straight season, the Falcons won 31 games, but this time advanced all the way to the National Championship game before falling to Delta State. Bentley completed the regular season as the fifth-ranked team in Division II and captured the NE-10 regular season and tournament crowns. Stacy led a very balanced team in scoring, averaging 12.0 points a game, and was recognized as the Northeast-10 Player of the Year.
