One of just four Falcons to be drafted and the only All-America in the program's history, Mike Hill is considered by many to be the best player to ever wear a Bentley baseball uniform. A standout from 1994 to 1997, Mike is Bentley's all-time leader in home runs (43), total bases (387), runs batted in (191) and slugging percentage (.763), and his .379 career bat-ting average ranks second in school history.
Â
"I am not a stats guy, but if you look at his numbers and compare them to anyone who ever played here, its overwhelming," said Bob DeFelice, Bentley’s head coach from 1969-2002, prior to Mike’s 2005 induction. "lt was not just for one year either, he put up those kind of numbers for four years."
Â
Mike came to Bentley and had an immediate impact on the field, hitting .300 with 26 RBIÂ in his freshman campaign, but that was only a glimpse of what he would accomplish. In 1995, he raised his average to .347, knocked in 34 runs and was named to the All-Northeast-10 first team.
Â
It was his junior season however, that saw Mike put up numbers that were previously unseen at Bentley. He hit a career-high .417 and reached base half the time he stepped to the plate. He set single season school records with 19 home runs, leading Division II in home runs per game, and 68 RBI. He was not only named the Northeast-10 Player of the Year but became Bentley's first All-America.
Â
Despite being asked to move from the outfield to third base, Mike would not disappoint in his senior season. He led the Falcons to a 26-17 record and a second-place finish in the NE-10 at 17-7. He hit .410 with an incredible .525 on-base percentage, bashed 15 home runs and knocked in 63. He was named the Nottheast-10 Player of the Year for the second consecutive year and was once again an All-America, but this time at third base.
Â
Following his senior season, Mike was drafted by the Chicago White Sox in the 41st round. "It wasn't a mistake that he was drafted; he was one of the hardest working kids that we have had here," according to DeFelice. "He had it in his mind that he wanted to play professionally and he did what it took to get there. Definitely a guy that you would want on your side no matter what."
Â
Hill played a season with the Sarasota White Sox in the Gulf Coast League (High A) in 1997. "It was his goal to play professional baseball and once he realized that it wasn't going to work he came back to Bentley and got his degree - that showed real character," said DeFelice. "Most people wouldn't have come back, but it was a testimony to his mother and father and how they raised him."
Â
Hired as a network technician at Bentley, Mike took classes part time and graduated from Bentley in 2000 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Management.
Â
A native of East Bridgewater, Massachusetts, Mike joined the baseball staff as an assistant coach in 2002 and served in that position until he was selected to succeed Coach DeFelice as head coach before the 2023 season.
