Hall of Fame
During the 1979-80 and 1980-81 seasons, the Bentley hockey team reached the pinnacle of success, winning back-to-back ECAC Division III Championships. It marked the first time in the history of the tournament that a team had captured consecutive titles.
Â
What made that accomplishment even more impressive was the fact that Bentley was in just its third and fourth years, respectively. of varsity hockey competition.
Â
One of the major reasons for the success was Joe Maguire, a forward from Dedham, Massachusetts who played on the college's first four varsity teams. He came in as a freshman, and quickly made his presence felt, scoring 16 goals and 13 assists while helping the team post a 10-9 record.
Â
After leading the team in scoring as a sophomore (19 goals, 17 assists, 36 points), Joe tallied 31 points (16 goals, 15 assists) as a junior while helping Bentley win its first ECAC title. The next year, the Tim Flynn-coached Falcons were nearly unstoppable, capturing their second straight ECAC crown and posting a sensational 20-1 record, with the only loss being in overtime at Saint Anselm. Joe didn't score quite as often (22 points}, but was named the ECAC Division Ill Player or the Year (the only Bentley player to ever receive the award) and the college's Outstanding Senior Athlete Award.
Â
Bentley's career scoring leader at the time of his graduation, Joe is currently tied for tenth on the all-time Bentley scoring list (121 points, including 65 goals, a school record at the time).
