"I can't believe he put up these kinds of numbers!"

That was the reaction of legendary Bentley baseball coach Bob DeFelice just before Mike DeMarco’s 1998 Hall of Fame induction. Not normally known as a "stats" guy, DeFelice was more than impressed when he looked back at Mike’s statistics from when he was a star outfielder, first baseman and pitcher for the Falcons in the mid to late-70's.

The numbers DeFelice was referring to are career totals of 118 games played, 62 runs scored, 114 hits, 22 doubles, 5 triples, 14 home runs, 80 RBl's and a .325 batting average at the conclusion of his career. Don't forget his pitching statistics that included three wins and a very respectable 4.03 ERA as a senior.
"Pitching was not Mike's forte but when we were in a bind, we could call him in from the outfield and get a few solid innings out of him", remembered Coach DeFelice. His pitching numbers just represented how versatile he was as a player and how he was willing to do whatever he was asked.

DeFelice went on to say that in the lefty's four years, he never had to say a word to him or coach him; he would just sit back and watch Mike play.

Mike led the team in hitting his sophomore and junior years posting a .357 and .361 batting average respectively. Recognized as a Division II All-Northeast Region outfielder in 1978, he was also named the Falcons' MVP the same year when he smacked 48 hits with three homers and 28 RBl's. His senior season, Mike finished second on the squad in hitting and was named MVP for the second time in as many years.

At the time of graduation, Mike was Bentley's career leader in homers and slugging percentage (.536) and was second to Hall of Farner Terry McGann in batting average and hits.

The Wakefield, Massachusetts native was also a quality student, recognized when he was named a co-recipient of Bentley's Edward J. Powers Scholar Athlete Award in 1979.
